Nagkaisa Multipurpose Cooperative of Asingan. "Agranud A!"

at Gloria MarisDAGUPAN City: 10 September 2012, we have just submitted the Articles of Cooperation and Bylaws of Nagkaisa Multipurpose Cooperative to Ms Jocelyn Vasquez of the Regional Cooperative Development Authority office along Perez Blvd in this City, and we understood it was good as approved except for the signature of the Director who happened to be on official trip, and then the assigned number.
We means Rogelio "Roger" Daranciang as Chair of Nagkaisa, Jose "Lito" Sales as Vice Chair, and Florencia "Poying" Altura as Treasurer. With her sister Norie, Poying drove us in her Toyota (nice ride) all the way from Asingan to Dagupan to Lingayen, where we visited the Office of Governor Amado T Espino and said hello to Board Member Ranjit Ramos-Shahani, who is from Asingan.

Norie and I tagged along, so we were witness to history being made - Nagkaisa Multipurpose Cooperative is the very first senior citizens' attempt to leave a legacy of more meaningful lives to the communities around them by leading them to cooperate among themselves, the know-what-to-do leading the clueless. We hope.

Photo shows Lito, Roger, Poying and Norie (I am behind the camera) enjoying talking and eating at Gloria Maris inside the CSI Dagupan Mall in Dagupan City after we submitted the Nagkaisa documents. It was a nice day; it was a nice lunch. Yes, we are seriously pursuing our dream of a cooperative for our hometown as if it never heard of it. A coop? It sounds so miniscule a dream. If that's how you think about a coop, your thinking is miniscule!

About the name Nagkaisa: It's only 1 word but in 2 languages, believe me! You can pronounce it Tagalog, Nagka-isa, and my preferred Ilocano, Nagkai-sa; they both mean the same thing: They united, or They became one.

So, Nagkaisa is a cooperative. What is a cooperative? "A cooperative is a business organization owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit" - the Government of Montana (sos.mt.gov). That is to say, a coop is a combined business of citizens to serve their combined good. There is no such other community-based and community-oriented business in the world as a coop - if you're thinking of the common good. We are.

According to Wikipedia, the cooperative movement started in Europe in the 19th century, particularly Britain and France. The first documented consumer coop was set up in 1769.
